Early last week, Daniel Donahoo a tech savvy parent who writes for GeekDad (a Wired.com blog dedicated to raising a “geek” generation) introduced me to World Book Day.

On March 1st, authors, illustrators and reading enthusiasts took to the streets in a celebration of literature and reading. The celebration is an internationally recognized effort, designated by UNESCO as an ode to books, storytelling and reading in over 100 different countries.

The celebration encouraged kids to investigate the pleasures of books by sending schools World Book Day Resource Packs filled with invigorating ideas for making reading a student’s favorite pastime.

Reflecting ont his mission of World Book Day, Donahoo poses these questions on the future of literature: Will it be likely in the coming years that specific days will be designated to celebrating Apps or Tablets? Will e-books and apps soon hold the same value in society as tangible books?

My suspicion is that the answers to both of these questions will be yes. Not so sure yourself? Check out these digital app page-turners and then weigh in!

  • Magic Town: Delve into a digital playground, rich with dozens of pictures books from top publishers. Each e-book is accompanied with games and interactive experiences.
  • Language City: A virtual world designed for those looking to learn a foreign language. Enter into a city, visit shops and interact with “locals” to practice learning English, Spanish, French and Portuguese. This app will be released in Spring 2012.
  • Scribble Press: This app makes it easy to create a book and write your own story. It was ranked as a Reader’s Choice 2011 Winner at Apps for Homeschooling. Kids can then read stories of their peers from around the world!
  • 3D Classic Literature Collection: Have your kids delve into some of the most classic stories ever writer with this first-ever 3D e-book application. As the #1 App in the Paid Book Charts, the app provides kids with a wide range of literature to pick from.

Join in on the conversation. How would you celebrate World E-book Day? Have any suggestions for other noteworthy reading apps? Shoot us a comment below!

Keep Calm and Learn on,

Nora
